{"id":3275,"date":"2022-04-10T15:35:52","date_gmt":"2022-04-10T20:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tonybeshara.com\/blog\/?p=3275"},"modified":"2022-04-11T11:02:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-11T16:02:41","slug":"how-to-deal-with-covid-hangover-hiring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tonybeshara.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-covid-hangover-hiring\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Manage the Covid Hiring Hangover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cCovid hiring&#8221; especially in regards to the interview process has created a whole new paradigm in the employing process.\u00a0 I warned about the zoom 30 minute interviews, in previous postings, and how they were destroying good hiring opportunities for both candidates and companies. The video medium has altered employer\u2019s decision-making viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Below are concepts that my business partner, Rich Lavinski, derived from this new employing process.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Never schedule an interview for less than an hour.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Any interview simply takes longer to gather information needed to make an informed decision. Sometimes the technology doesn&#8217;t work very well, and getting it fixed eats up time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Video Time Consumption<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Small talk eats up more time than personal, face-to-face interviews do.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distractions &amp; Interruptions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Disruptions are more likely to occur&#8230; the cat enters the camera view or unexpected noise in the background (dog barking, kids playing, etc.). These kinds of things make the interview less professional.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Interview Planning<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Hiring authorities need to plan the interview more carefully. It&#8217;s really important to write out beforehand the questions the candidate needs to be asked, write the answers clearly so they can be referred to even weeks later.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effective Topic Coverage<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Make sure you cover all of the topics you need answered. Limit these to only three or four. The time is going to go a lot faster than you think. A face-to-face interview doesn&#8217;t have the perception of time limit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Determine Next Steps<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Determine what information you need to take the next steps and evaluate that decision about a candidate right then.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Importance of Face-to-Face<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Never hire a candidate without a face-to-face interview.\u00a0 We hear from our IT staffing clients all the time about interviewing one candidate and qualifying that candidate via video only to have a different candidate show up, in person, for the consulting job.\u00a0 Somewhere along the line, most of us wouldn&#8217;t buy a car without test driving it and we\u00a0surely wouldn&#8217;t buy a house without walking through it.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent mistakes in employing, do not let this new \u201cCovid hiring\u201d paradigm hangover\u00a0cause a fault in your traditional hiring process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cCovid hiring&#8221;
