{"id":1954,"date":"2017-02-03T22:33:14","date_gmt":"2017-02-04T03:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tonybeshara.com\/blog\/?p=1954"},"modified":"2017-02-10T10:19:30","modified_gmt":"2017-02-10T15:19:30","slug":"mangled-metaphors-and-misapplied-analogies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tonybeshara.com\/blog\/mangled-metaphors-and-misapplied-analogies\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8230;.mangled metaphors and misapplied analogies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can\u2019t tell you the number of very educated candidates over the years that in their speaking, become fond of metaphors\u2026which is OK\u2026however\u2026they mangle the metaphor.<\/p>\n<p>They say things like \u201cpass mustard\u201c, instead of \u201cpass muster\u201d\u2026\u201dtook off like haywire\u201d\u2026instead of \u201cwildfire\u201d\u2026\u201dpreaching to the congregation\u201c\u2026instead of \u201cchoir\u201d\u2026I have had different candidates tell me they wanted to \u201chit the ball running,\u201d \u201cgive their best foot forward,\u201d or said, \u201dI\u2019m living fat on the hog\u201d and the &#8220;cream will rise to the crop&#8221;\u2026&#8221;you are barking up the wrong dog&#8221;\u2026&#8221;eats at my crawl&#8221;\u2026&#8221;brightest block in the box \u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I could go on, but you get the message. We have all heard folks do this at times\u2026we are amused and kind of laugh. But in the interviewing situation, they can be disastrous. This is especially true if they are repeated. They are distracting and, in most cases, don\u2019t reflect well on the person being interviewed. Soooo, practice interviewing. If you have a tendency to mangle your metaphors or misapply your analogies, have someone help you or get yourself some and google a few. If you are going to lose a deal, don\u2019t let it be over something so simple to correct.
