….what to expect from your recruiter

11/12/2008

most people don’t know what to expect from a recruiter…they will act like they do because the don’t want to appear ignorant…

there are at least 9 or 10 different types of recruiters and they  often function very differently…retained search folks, contingency recruiters, “placers,” internal corporate recruiters…all work quite differently..

often when potential candidates contact or are contacted by a recruiter their expectations are not met because the recruiter failed to set them and the candidate didn’t ask…

read the article on the Babich web site that discusses the different types of rercruiters…those of us with lots of experience always try to expain what we expect from our candidates and what our candidates should expect from us

the imporant lesson is to be sure you aks, “what can i expect from you?”…that way, you won’t be disappointed

Tony,

I am an Independent Recuritment Consultant based out of Bangalore India. My firm’s area of operations include Facility Management, Interior & Building Material Industry. Before setting up my business I had no relevant experience in recruitments, however, being the person I am, my natural skills were people oriented and hence I choose this profession. I am now looking for guidance and help from a mentor. Requesting your advice on this.

I recently listened to your eBook Acing the Interview. I also listened to 3 other eBooks on interviewing. I only gave yours the highest rating possible on Audible.
I disagree with you in one area…discussing ethical situations involving former employers with the interviewer. I’m convinced that I missed out on a career opportunity because the interviewer pushed hard on the topic of ethics and I admitted that I had left a prior job because the employer was overly aggressive with a certain tax authority. I now realize that I broke the IMA ethical standard on confidentiality. I should not have disclosed this confidential information unless legally obligated to do so. The employer must have thought that I could be a potential loose cannon for them and possibly leave and say something similar about them some day. I didn’t get the job. I should have spelled out the confidentiality standard and assumed the role of a seasoned professional.

I loved your book. Thanks for the great advice!!!

Thanks, Jeff… it’s very simple… they just simply have to ask the recruiter that contacts youWhat their role is and what you should expect from them

As long as we’re at it here, it might be good to remind readers that we, as recruiters, are not miracle workers… basically, we are “information brokers”… our allies are subject to the whims of our clients… in the same way that a hiring authority will tell a candidate one thing one day and another thing another… they do the same with us… don’t expect any “magic” from any recruiter… Inside information… yes!… Magic… no!

The Bogus "Informational Interview"

Here's one example of the phony advice being offered to new graduates and other first time job seekers: "pursue informational interviews as a way to expose yourself to an organization". Supposedly, employers are willing to accommodate a fact-finding interview, an "informational interview", even if they do not have an open position.
