…so, life and interviewing are unfair

10/03/2008

..interviewing and hiring are staged, contrived events…they aren’t reality…but, like churchill said about democracy, it’s the worst form of government after all the others have been tried..

candidates complain that hiring authorities ask very unfair questions, that have nothing to do with the job (i.e. “why are manholes round?”…”what is one thing about you, you don’t want me to know?”) …and employers get hung up on one or two answers that aren’t the way they would answer the question..(i.e. define “consultative selling”)…

we have seen candidates and hiring authorities get hung up on the smallest, most silly things that really have nothing to do with a candidates ability to do the job or the quality of a job opportunity…

no sense in getting mad or disappointed about things like this…when they happen, the situations are unfair…not right…just unfair

but, so is life…get over it and move on…you’ll hardly ever rectify or change the situation…accept what you may not understand …move on..

IMO, Tony, there is no such thing as an ‘unfair’ question put to a candidate/recruit/applicant.

Any and all questions are opportunities.

That these questions ‘throw’ people only speaks to their inability to think on their feet.

I’m not saying they ’should know the right answer’ but they ought to at least understand they are being challenged and simply accept the challenge instead of getting pissy about it later with their recruiter.

I’ve been known to ask some seemingly unrelated questions because it gives me an opportunity to see how a recruit handles challenges- even seemingly ‘unfair’ challenges.

Just sayin’…

The Bogus "Informational Interview"

Here's one example of the phony advice being offered to new graduates and other first time job seekers: "pursue informational interviews as a way to expose yourself to an organization". Supposedly, employers are willing to accommodate a fact-finding interview, an "informational interview", even if they do not have an open position.
