…five biggest resume mistakes

09/25/2008

1. people overestimate the value of a resume…it isn’t going to get you a job…sending it, thinking that it is magical, is an error…it may not even get you an interview

2. the average resume gets read in 10 seconds…don’t think someone is reading and digesting what you wrote…if you don’t get their attention in 10 seconds, it isn’t working

3. people underestimate the number of resumes they are competing with…on average …300

4. people overestimate the qualifications of the people who will screen, read and or “pass” their resume along…if you think the “right” people are reading your resume..you are wrong…

5. people write the wrong content on their resume…they write what they understand about themselves …forgetting that unless they are clear about what their company does and what they do, most people won’t understand it…if your resume can’t be understood by a high school senior…who doesn’t know you…you are writing the wrong content…

I left professional selling to purse nursing school. now I have found out I’m more suited for outside sales. My question is about live references from my years as a sales rep. and do you think its okay to show the proven track recorded even though its been years?

sure…it is what you have to sell…it might be hard to get intnerviews with simply sending a resume…so pick up the phone and call a sales manager and get an interview…
try to find your old sales managers and get them to help you…call every old friend in sales you can remember …read my blog entries …they will tell you how to start and sustain a job search…also go to http://www.thejobsearchsolution.com

I have a strong financial background but I believe that my resume is outdated as I want to maximize my changes of finding a job in nonprofit. I would like to revamp my resume and cover letter. Could you guide me in finding a good professional resume writer? Thank you,

I recommend your book, The Job Search Solution, to my clients. The five resume mistakes you cite are all true, and I have to agree Tony. Thank you for doing the work you do, and helping job hunters. Your approach echoes mine. I like to say that “all people deserve meaningful work.” And the word “meaningful” is open to each person to interpret!

The Bogus "Informational Interview"

Here's one example of the phony advice being offered to new graduates and other first time job seekers: "pursue informational interviews as a way to expose yourself to an organization". Supposedly, employers are willing to accommodate a fact-finding interview, an "informational interview", even if they do not have an open position.
